On October 9, the United States sanctioned the International Criminal Court itself, blocking its US property and restricting dealings with it. WND headlined the move “Crippling the globalists”, a word Rubio used and the headline credits to no one. “Crippling the globalists” has a target with no name, no country and no count. The court the headline names next is, by its own statement, an institution entrusted by 125 States Parties to try genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and aggression. One word turns those states, judges and prosecutors into a single body with a single intent. The tell: a group word with no number where an institution with a membership list should be. WND’s page first names someone the court pursued, Netanyahu’s 2024 warrant, in its 13th paragraph. The word did not start at WND. UPI reports Rubio called those running the court “globalist experts an ocean away” in his video on X. WND’s headline drops the speaker, so an official’s insult reads as the outlet’s description; its eighth paragraph credits Rubio. AP names the same day plainly: “US hits International Criminal Court with sweeping sanctions”. The coverage sits at Essentialization, a court made into a category, with Rubio’s “end this threat for good” adding Threat Assessment. The administration’s stated objection, per Al Jazeera, is that the court pursues officials of non-member states such as Israel. That is a legal claim with facts attached, and it can be weighed. “Globalists” cannot be weighed, only felt, and a headline built on it has no room for the people the court pursued. The other side reaches for feeling too: the Daily Beast supplies “Petty Revenge”, and the ICC’s own release calls the sanctions “an assault”.
