On October 13, The US Sun listed five jobs for workers over 50 at employers it calls age-friendly, under a headline about not having to “DIE” before retiring. Its lead survey figure reverses what the survey found. One word on the page is in capitals, and it is “DIE”. The article under it never mentions death. It lists five jobs at employers it calls age-friendly, gives pay for four, and first mentions companies hiring in the fifth paragraph, after survey figures and a line saying it “feels even harder to get a job.” The headline takes a plain worry, working longer than you planned, and writes it as your death arriving first. The figure the article stands on runs backward. The Sun writes that “58% of workers don’t think” they will retire on schedule. Thrivent’s release, from an Ipsos survey of 2,032 Americans in June, says 58% of non-retirees are confident they will, unchanged from 2025. The survey’s real worry is the 47% who doubt they will ever fully retire, which Click2Houston put in plain words in August. The headline rides the fear of loss: it counts what you could lose, never what you already have. Everyone in the chain has something to offer you. Thrivent, by its full name Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, sells financial services, and one of its tips is “Work With a Financial Advisor.” The certifying group courts people over 50 as “talent and consumers.” A headline’s job is to be opened, and the capitals do that job. The tell: when a headline shouts a word the story never uses again, the word was written for your nerves, not for the facts.
