LifeSiteNews turns Italian bishops’ Islam topic into their creed

Italy’s Catholic bishops promote Koran as ‘revealed Word of God’ in schoolsRead it where it was published
A phrase from a reporter’s list of topics, set in quotation marks beside “promote”, and you hear Italy’s bishops preaching another faith to schoolchildren. The betrayal you feel is built from a summary, not from the sheets.
On October 21, Italy’s bishops’ conference presented 11 sheets on Islam, written by Christians and Muslims, for teachers. On October 26 LifeSiteNews said the bishops “promote Koran as ‘revealed Word of God’” in schools.
What they said
On October 21, 2026, the Italian Bishops’ Conference, the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies and Italy’s Embassy to the Holy See presented 11 sheets on Islam for teachers, mainly in schools, at Palazzo Borromeo in Rome.

“promote” A verb of advocacy. Teaching what a faith believes becomes the bishops endorsing it. A plain sentence says the bishops published sheets explaining Islam to teachers.
“‘revealed Word of God’” The quotation marks hang the words on the bishops with no speaker named. The page’s own fourth paragraph traces them to a Vatican News list of topics.
“in schools” Brings children into the sentence. The CEI says the sheets are tools for teachers, mainly for schools, meant to respect differences, and also offered in English.
“il Corano come parola rivelata di Dio” The phrase’s only source on record: one item in a reporter’s list of topics, beside worship and the prophetic model, describing what the Islamic tradition holds.
“nasce dalla consapevolezza della propria fede” The clause LifeSiteNews cut: the dialogue grows from awareness of one’s own faith and refuses both shallow syncretism and fundamentalist closure. Without it, the quote reads as surrender.
“pericolosi di islamofobia” The same knife for the cardinal: dangerous with Islamophobia is a verdict in one word, laid on headlines he does not name.
The analysis
The verb does the claiming. “Promote” makes Italy’s bishops endorse the Koran’s revelation, and the quotation marks around ‘revealed Word of God’ hang the words on them without naming who wrote them. LifeSiteNews’s own fourth paragraph traces the phrase to a Vatican News list of the sheets’ topics. There it reads il Corano come parola rivelata di Dio, the Koran as the revealed word of God, next to worship and the prophetic model: what Muslims hold, listed as a subject for teachers. No page quotes the sheet itself.
The page trims the rest to fit. Its list of modules drops two topics Vatican News names: where Christianity and Islam agree and differ, and Islam’s presence in Italy. Its quote from Don Alberto Gastaldi stops before his clause that the dialogue starts from awareness of one’s own faith. Cardinal Matteo Zuppi’s line that the sheets help explain Italy’s Christian roots does not appear. What is left hands a reader who already fears a church walking away from its faith the proof they came looking for.
The tell: quotation marks in a headline with no speaker beside them. Ask whose sentence it was; here it is a reporter’s summary, not a bishop’s creed. The same eyes fall on the cardinal. Zuppi called certain headlines dangerous with Islamophobia and named none, a verdict in one word. Where he said certi titoli di giornale, certain newspaper headlines, LifeSiteNews’s account writes “Islamic proliferation”, a phrase found in no other report, and the word “mere” appears only in its account too.
The words. “Promote” is a verb for spreading a belief. Zuppi described the sheets the other way: the one clear thing, he said, was that they must not be catechism, the teaching of a faith.
The history. On October 27, 1986, John Paul II brought leaders of world religions to Assisi to pray for peace. Zuppi called the sheets one of its fruits. The 40th anniversary falls tomorrow.
From the book
Loaded Language: Emotive Framing
One verb, “promote”, turns a teachers’ sheet on what Muslims believe into the bishops’ own endorsement, and the quotation marks finish the job without an argument being made.
Chapter 23, Linguistic Hacks
The Narrative Frame
The same 11 sheets arrive in two stories: Vatican News sets them against the walls of prejudice, LifeSiteNews as a church conceding its faith in classrooms. Each headline picks the feeling before the facts arrive.
Chapter 9, The Cognitive Cascades
Your move
- The Master Question: the line is built to make you feel betrayed, a church handing its schools to another faith. Why now, with the sheets five days old? Anger at a betrayal asks to be acted on: why do they need my anger?
- Does it touch you? Unless you teach religion in an Italian school or have a child in that class, nothing in your week changes. It is weather: watch it pass without bleeding it into your evening or feeding it to anyone.
- Your nudge: which pulled first, the verb “promote” or the quoted “revealed Word of God”? Name the belief it pressed on, about your church or about Islam. The same words push another reader the other way; question your own side too.
