On October 16, Fox News headlined its school and campus newsletter with Judeo-Christian values “under assault in American schools”. Its lead item is a settlement LifeWise Academy won from Washington’s Everett School District: an apology, board training and $275,000 in fees. The headline puts “Judeo-Christian values” “under assault” and names no one: no district, no court, no board, no attacker. Its first item, headed “BIBLE BIAS: Washington school district”, is a settlement the Bible program won. Everett’s board apologizes, takes religious liberty training and pays $275,000 of LifeWise Academy’s attorney’s fees. The sentence counts on the mind weighing what it might lose and never what was gained: a win for the faith group reaches the reader as a loss. The rest of the bundle: a Pennsylvania district’s gender-neutral “universal toilet rooms”, a Haverford professor charged over alleged antisemitic online attacks, and a photo caption on a State Department expansion of the Mexico City Policy. One banner turns four separate disputes into one front. That is the tell to carry into the next headline: a war with a named victim and no named attacker, and unrelated cases gathered under a single title. The page under the headline is quieter. Fox’s own article gives the settlement terms “according to the organization” and the injunction “according to LifeWise”, and carries the district’s word that its policy did not change. The only court ruling came in April, when Judge Lauren King granted part of LifeWise’s request for a preliminary injunction. The newsletter landed on the evening of October 16, 17 days before the November 3 midterms.
