On October 10, a vehicle driven by an ICE agent struck a 48-year-old man running from an enforcement stop on Clay Road in northwest Harris County, the sheriff’s office said. Breitbart headlined him “Injured After Fleeing.” The specimen’s subject is “Illegal Alien” and its verb is “Injured”, with nobody doing the injuring. What hit him, a vehicle driven by an ICE agent, as the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said, is missing. In its place stands “with Previously Deported Criminal”: the companion, the operation’s target, who “remains at large”, fills the slot the car left. The tell is an injury with no cause: when a headline says someone was hurt and names nothing that hurt him, look for what moved. The same crash in other words: CBS at 2:00 PM ET, “Vehicle driven by ICE agents in Texas hits and injures man, sheriff says”; ABC13 at 4:11 PM ET, “ICE-driven vehicle strikes him”; the Houston Chronicle, “ICE SUV hits man”. Breitbart’s headline came at 6:23 PM ET. Its fourth paragraph reaches the vehicle, and there the man “ran directly in front of” it. The man who was hit is Miguel Parra-Hernandez, 48, with what appears to be a broken leg, and the page lists no criminal record for him. The account is ICE’s, as Breitbart prints it, and its list of “sanctuary politicians” links back to earlier DHS press releases. It hangs the flight on people who were not on Clay Road. When the car leaves the sentence, the agent at the wheel faces no question in the headline, and ICE faces none about how its chase ended. The two accounts differ on how he came to be in front of the vehicle; both say it hit him. No page carries a word from him or his family.
